Astley, Shropshire

Historical Description

Astley, formerly a chapelry in the parish of St Mary, Shrewsbury, Salop, is 1 mile S of Hadnall station on the L. & N.W.R., and 4½ miles NNE of Shrewsbury, under which it has a post office; Hadnall is the money order and telegraph office. Acreage, 1204; population, 244. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; value, £150, in the gift of Trustees. The church is ancient, and was restored in 1883. Astley House is the chief residence.

St. Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of a chancel, nave and an embattled western tower containing a clock, erected in 1837, and one bell: in the south wall is a Norman arch, now blocked, a window with the date 1568 over it, and a locker: the church was restored in 1883, when it was new-roofed and reseated, at a cost of £350.
