Caldecott, Rutland

Historical Description

Caldecott, a parish in Rutland, on the rivers Eye and Welland, adjacent to Rockingham Castle station on the L. & N.W.R. and G.N.R., 4½ miles S of Uppingham, which is the post town; telegraph office, Rockingham. Acreage, 1162; population of the civil parish, 300; of the ecclesiastical, 747. The living is a vicarage annexed to the rectory of Lyddington in the diocese of Peterborough. The church is an Early English building of stone.

Church of England

St. John (parish church)

The church of St. John is an Early English building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with lofty octagonal spire, containing a clock and 5 bells, four of which are dated 1696, the fifth appearing to be of much older date; there is a memorial window to Mary Jane Browne, erected in 1860: the font is ancient, and the church retains some ancient encaustic tiles in the middle wall beside the chancel arch: a new vestry and organ chamber were added in 1908, at a cost of £400: there are 170 sittings.
