Sandford St Martin, Oxfordshire

Historical Description

Sandford, St Martin, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the river Dome, 4½ miles W by N from Heyford station on the Oxford and Banbury branch of the G. W. R., and 7 NW from Woodstock. It has a post office under Oxford; money order and telegraph office, Middle Barton. Acreage of parish, 2292; population, 443. There is a parish council consisting of five members. Sandford Park is a chief residence standing in a park of over 100 acres. An ancient cross stands in the village, believed to date from the 13th century. It was restored from a design by the late G. E. Street, B.A., in 1856. Ledwell is a hamlet 1 mile N from the village. A former large mansion here was the seat of Earl Deloraine. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; gross value, £140. The church is a building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and an embattled western tower. It contains a Norman font and some ancient memorials. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel at Ledwell.
