Ducklington, Oxfordshire

Historical Description

Ducklington, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the river Windrush, 1½ mile S of W½itney town and station on the G.W.R. The parish includes also the chapelry of Hardwick. It has a post office under Witney; money order and telegraph office, Witney. Acreage, 1934; population, 439. Cokethorpe Park, the seat of the Strick-land family, is a fine mansion standing in a park of 170 acres. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford, with the chapelry of Hardwick annexed; net yearly value, o£380 with residence. Patron, Magdalen College, Oxford. The church is an ancient and interesting building of stone in mixed styles, has a rich north aisle, with stone carvings, and contains a Norman font and a remarkable altar-piece. Hardwick, which is a separate parish for civil purposes (population, 100), contains a small and very ancient church.
