Chesters, Northumberland
Historical Description
Chesters, the seat of the Clayton family, on the right bank of the North Tyne river, in Northumberland, adjacent to the Roman wall, 4 miles NNW of Hexham. Very considerable remains of the Roman station Cilurnum have been discovered here in very good condition, and are of the greatest interest. Near here are also the colossal remains of the Roman bridge over the Tyne.
