Woodford (near Thrapston), Northamptonshire

Historical Description

Woodford (near Thrapston), a parish, with a village, in Northamptonshire, 2½ miles SW by W of Thrapston, and 1 mile SE from Twywell station on the Kettering and Cambridge branch of the M.R. It has a post and money order office under Thrapston; telegraph office, Thrapston. Acreage, 2265; population, 1547. There is a parish council consisting of thirteen members. The manor belongs to the Stopford-Sackville family. Woodford House is a chief residence. Shoemaking is carried on, and there are large ironstone mines. A temperance hall, used for lectures, concerts, &c., was erected in 1883. Roman relics have been found, and there are British tumuli in the parish. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £400 with residence. Patron, Lord St John. The church is a Spacious building of stone in the Early English and Later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, N and S porches, and a western tower with spire. It has some ancient and interesting tombs and memorials. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels.
