Stanion, Northamptonshire

Historical Description

Stanion, a parish in Northamptonshire, 2 miles SE from Corby station on the Kettering and Nottingham section of the M.R., and 6 NE from Kettering. It has a post office under Thrapston; money order and telegraph office, Brig-=stock. Acreage, 1644; population, 312. The manor belongs to the Countess of Cardigan. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to Brigstock; joint gross value, £260 with residence, in the gift of Lord Barnard. The church is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and a western tower surmounted by a fine spire. In it is preserved a huge fossil bone about 6 feet in length, known locally as " the Dun Cow's Rib," but the history of which is unknown.

St. Peter (parish church)

The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with fine spire, containing a clock and 4 bells: in the church is a huge bone, 6 feet high, called "the Dun Cow's rib," of which nothing is known.
