Stiffkey, Norfolk
Historical Description
Stiffkey, a parish, with a village, in Norfolk, near the North Sea, 34 miles E by S of Wells station on the G.E.R. It has a post office under Wells (R.S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Binham. Acreage, 2186; population of the. civil parish, 450; of the ecclesiastical, 612. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to the Marquis Townshend, who is chief landowner. There was formerly a large castellated mansion here called Stiffkey Hall, which has left some remains. Warborough Hill and Camping Hill were anciently entrenched. The living is a double rectory, united with Morston, in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £521 with residence. Patron, the Marquis Townshend. Anciently there were two churches standing in the same churchyard, but only the church of St John the Baptist remains. This is an ancient building in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, N porch, and an embattled western tower.
