Great Hautbois, Norfolk

Historical Description

Hautbois, Great (commonly called Hobbis), a parish in Norfolk, on the river Bure, adjoining Coltishall, and 7 miles NNE of Norwich. There is a station at Coltishall on the G.E.R. The post town is Norwich; money order and telegraph office, Coltishall. Acreage, 608; population of the civil parish, 180; of the ecclesiastical, with Coltishall, 1073. An hospital for poor travellers was founded in the time of Henry HI., by Sir Peter de Alto Bosco, or Hautbois, at the head of what was called Hautbois Causeway. The living is a rectory, now annexed to Coltishall, in the diocese of Norwich. ' The old church having fallen into decay, a new one, on a better site, was built in 1866. A few scattered remains of an hospital for poor travellers are still to be seen.
