Woodhall and Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Woodhall and Woodhall Spa, a parish, with a village, in Lincolnshire, containing Woodhall Spa station on the Horncastle branch of the G.N.R., and 3 miles SW of Horncastle. Post town, Horncastle. Acreage, 3913; population, 871. The manor, with Woodhall Lodge, belongs to the Hotchkin family. Woodhall Spa extends over a strip of light sandy soil, enjoying a dry and bracing air, and protected from the N and W winds by a range of lofty woods. A medicinal spring was discovered in 1811, and in 1886 the estate, consisting of about 100 acres, was purchased by a syndicate. Extensive alterations and improvements have been effected, a large new bath house has been erected, and the old one enlarged and remodelled. The water, which is strongly impregnated with iodine, flows in a strong stream, through a soft spongy rock at a depth of 540 feet, and yields about 20,000 gallons per day; it is used both internally and externally, and has been of the greatest efficacy in muscular, nervous, and cutaneous affections. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £75. Patron, the Bishop of Lincoln. The church is a small building of stone in the Gothic style. There are Presbyterian, Wesleyan, and Methodist chapels.
