Sutton St James, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Sutton St James, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, 4 miles SW of Long Sutton station on the Lynn branch of the Great Northern and Midland Joint railway, and 9 N from Wisbech, with a post and money order office under Wisbech; telegraph office, Tydd. Acreage, 2707; population of the civil parish, 605; of the ecclesiastical, 596. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. An ancient cross, with octangular stepped base, is on Ravensbank, to the W of the village, and three-quarters of a mile SW there are the remains of another. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Lincoln; net value, £99 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Long Sutton. The church was originally erected about 1300, was destroyed, with the exception of the tower and chancel, during the Protectorate, and was restored and partly rebuilt in 1879. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels and charities £124.
