Historical Description

Somercotes, South, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, 3½ miles NW from Saltfleetby station on the Louth and East Coast branch of the G.N.R., and 8 NE by N from Louth. There is a post office under Louth; money order and telegraph office. North Somercotes. Acreage, 2642; population, 415. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £465 with residence, in the gift of the Duchy of Lancaster. The church, sometimes called the " Queen of the Marsh," is a handsome building of stone of the Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular periods, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, S porch, and a western tower surmounted by a lofty and graceful spire which serves as a sea-mark. This is the only church with a spire, with the exception of Louth, in the marsh district. There are also Free Methodist and Wesleyan chapels and some small charities. Cardinal Robert de Somercote, who was poisoned in 1241 to prevent his being elected Pope, is thought to have been a native.
