Somerby (Grantham), Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Somerby, near Grantham, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, 3 miles SE from Grantham, which is the nearest railway station. There is a post office under Grantham; money order and telegraph office, Ropsley. For civil purposes The parish is now called Old Somerby and New Somerby. Old Somerby has a population of 185, New Somerby about 1700, and is in the borough of Grantham. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 1717. The manor belongs to the Earl of Dysart. The living is a rectory, embracing New Somerby, in the diocese of Lincoln, in the gift of the Earl of Ancaster. The church is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a beautiful Norman chancel arch with some other Norman work. It has some ancient brasses, tombs, and monuments. The mission church of St Anne was erected in 1884. The township-chapelry of Humby is noticed separately.
