Riby, Lincolnshire

Historical Description

Riby, a parish, with a village, in Lincolnshire, on the Wolds, 3½ miles SSW of Stallingborough station on the main line of the M.S. & L.R., and 6½ WSW of Great Grimsby. It has a post office under Stallingborough (S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Laceby. Acreage, 2803; population, 288. Riby Grove is a fine mansion of stone surrounded by pleasant grounds. The manor belongs to the Pretyman family, who are sole landowners. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £119. The church was partly restored and partly rebuilt in 1869 at a cost of about £5000, and is an edifice of stone consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, aisles, and a central embattled pinnacled tower. A Wesleyan chapel was built here in 1884. There are endowed almshouses for four poor men, which were erected in 1848.
