Owmby, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Owmby (sometimes called Owmby-by-Spital), a parish in Lincolnshire, on an affluent of the river Ancholme, 2 miles E of Ermine Street, and 7½ WSW of Market Rasen station on the Hull and Lincoln branch of the M.S. & L.R. It has a post office under Lincoln; money order office, Normanby-by-Spital; telegraph office, Ingham. Acreage, 1721; population, 231. The manor belongs to the Dalton family. Many Roman coins have been found. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; net Maine, £173 with residence. Patron, the Duchy of Lancaster. The church is a very ancient building of stone, partly of Norman date, consisting of chancel, nave, N aisle, vestry, and an embattled western tower. The rector of Owmby-by-Spital is also vicar of Normanby-by-Spital. Both churches are dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.
