Colsterworth, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Colsterworth, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village lies on the river Witham, and on the High Lyke Roman Way, 4 miles W of Corby station on the G.N.R., and 8 S of Grantham, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office of the name of Colsterworth, under Grantham. The parish includes also the hamlets of Woolsthorpe and Twyford. Acreage, 3624; population, 894. The manor of Woolsthorpe belonged to the father of Sir Isaac Newton, and the manor-house, still standing, but now a farmhouse, was Sir Isaac's birthplace. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; value, £541. Patron, the Bishop of Lincoln. The church is chiefly Early English, with some Norman and later portions, and has a tower. There are Free Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Walker, the author of the "English Particles," was rector.
