Wanlip, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Wanlip (originally Onlip or Anlep), a village, a township, and a parish, in Leicestershire, on the river Soar, 1½ mile W of Syston station on the main line of the M.R. Post town, Leicester; money order and telegraph office, Syston. Acreage, 977; population, 91. The manor, with Wanlip Hall, a mansion of brick standing in a well-wooded park, belongs to the Palmer family, who are sole landowners. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough gross value, £300 with residence. The church is an ancient building dating. from the 14th century, and consisting of chancel, nave, N porch, and an embattled western tower. It contains a fine brass of its founders, Sir Thomas and Lady Walsh, of 1393 date, and several monuments of the Palmer family.
