Syston, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Syston, a village and a parish in Leicestershire. Th& village stands at a forking of the Midland railway system, near the river Wreak, 5 miles NNE of Leicester. Framework-knitting was formerly carried on to a large extent, but has now been largely superseded by machinery. There are some boot factories. Syston has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leicester. The parish comprises 1869 acres; population, 2582. There is a parish council consisting of ten members. Gypsum is found, and formerly was much worked. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £251 with residence. Patron, the University of Oxford. The church is a large building of granite rubble in the Perpendicular style, and there are Baptist, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels.
