Queeniborough, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Queeniborough, a village, a township, and a parish in Leicestershire, on an affluent of the river Wreak, 2½ miles E "by N of Syston station on the main line of the M.R., and 6½ NNE of Leicester, with a post and money order office under Leicester; telegraph office, Syston. Acreage, 2182; population, 510. There is a parish council consisting of six members and a chairman. Much of the land is devoted to pasture, and Stilton cheese is made to a considerable extent. The Upper Hall is a mansion of brick standing at the south-east end of the village. The Old Hall, at the lower end of the village, is of historic interest. Prince Rupert stayed here at the time of the attack on Leicester. Coppia is also a chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £165 with residence. The church is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, S porch, and a western tower and spire. The church was restored in 1858, the tower and spire in 1883, and the interior in 1885. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels and some small charities.
