Historical Description
Osgathorpe, a village and a parish in Leicestershire. The village stands on an affluent of the river Soar, 2 miles NNE of Swannington station on the Leicester and Burton branch of the M.R,, and 5 ENE of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and is a pleasant place. It has a post office under Loughborough; money order office, Whitwick; telegraph office, Worthington (R.S.) The parish comprises 923 acres; population, 306. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor belongs to the Story family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £218 with residence. The church, which is of the 13th century, is a beautiful building of stone in the Early and Late Decorated styles; was restored, with addition of apsidal E end, in 1861; has a spire-shaped turret with two bells, and contains a restored ancient octagonal font. A valuable charity, founded by Mr Thomas Harley of Osgathorpe in 1683, comprises an endowed free school in Osgathorpe for fifty boys, and a residence in the same parish for six widows of clergymen, who have each pensions of £70 yearly. Under the same trustees is Alsop's Charity for the widow of a clergyman, consisting of a cottage home and a yearly pension of £17.
