Historical Description
Knaptoft, a township and a parish in Leicestershire. The township lies near the Grand Union Canal, the Market Harborough and Rugby branch of the L. & N.W.B., and the boundary with Northampton, 2 miles WNW of Thed-dingworth station, and 7 ENE of Lutterworth. The parish contains also part of the hamlet of Walton, and The chapel-ries of Shearsby and Mowsley. It has a post office under Rugby; money order and telegraph office, Theddingworth. Area of township, 1420 acres; population, 58. A mineral spring of some medicinal repute, but not much resorted to, is at an inn in Shearsby township. The living is a rectory, with the chapelries of Shearsby and Mowsley, in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £664. The parish church is a ruin, and the parishioners use the churches of Shearsby and Mowsley. The church at Shearsby was a building of stone in the Early English style. The tower was erected in 1789, and the rest of the church, with the exception of a part of the E wall, was rebuilt m 1872, The church at Mowsley is an ancient cruciform building of stone in the Early English style. Bishop Watson was rector.
