Holt or Nevill Holt, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Holt or Nevill Holt, a township-chapelry in Medbourne parish, Leicestershire, near the river Welland, 2 miles E from Medbourne station on the G.N. and L. & N.W. Joint railways, and 7½ NNE from Market Harborough. Post town, Market Harborough; money order and telegraph office, Medbourne. Acreage, 1178; population, 41. The manor belongs to the Cunard family, whose seat is at Holt Hall, a large castellated mansion on a bold eminence, with fine views. Iron and limestone have been found in the parish. The living is a chapelry of the rectory of Medbourne, in the diocese of Peterborough. The church stands close to Holt Hall; is a fine large building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style; consists of nave, transepts, and chancel, with embattled tower and lofty spire, and contains some good monuments.

Church of England

St. Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary is a cruciform building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower with lofty spire, containing one small bell: the chancel retains Decorated piscinae and two sedilia: in the south side are two hagioscopes, but one of these has been built up: the stained east window is a memorial to Edward Cunard, d. 29 Aug. 1877: there is a mural tablet to Anne Nevill, ob. 21 Sept. 1644, and in the south transept, separated from the rest of the church by an iron railing, is a plain tomb, erected by Sir Thomas Nevill knt. of this place, in 1633, in memory of his grandfather, Sir Thomas Nevill knt. who died 5 March, 1569, and was buried in the chancel; on either side of the inscription are the arms of the family; near this and built into the wall is a marble monument, in the centre of which is a kneeling effigy of a lady, and on either side an angel supporting drapery which hangs from a canopy: the whole is crowned by the arms of the family and a human skull, and at the base are two inscriptions, one a rhyming epitaph and the other to Jane, wife of Christopher Thursby esq. of Bocking, Essex, ob. 10 Oct. 1631, and her two sons, William and Nevill: there is also a band some marble tomb, with the recumbent effigy of a knight in complete armour, figures of children and a shield of arms, to Sir Thomas Nevill and his two wives, Jane, daughter of Toby Haughton esq. and Elizabeth, widow of Sir John Fern; he died 2 March, 1636, and is buried in the chancel; on the wall above are suspended two helmets and two old swords: in the transept is a tablet inscribed to Cosmos Henry Joseph Nevill esq, d. 20 Sept. 1763, and Lady Mary Lee, his wife, second daughter of George Henry (Lee), Earl of Litchfield, d. 25 March, 1758: in the nave is a brass to Edward Cunard, 10th Royal Hussars. d 29 Aug. 1877, erected by his brother officers: there is a beautifully carved oak pulpit: the church was restored in 1879, at a cost of £500, and affords 100 sittings.
