Historical Description
Whittle-le-Woods, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish, in Leyland parish, Lancashire. The village stands 2 miles E by S of Leyland station on a branch of the L. & N.W.R., and 6 SSE of Preston, is a scattered place, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Chorley, several stone quarries, and a large brewery. The township comprises 1355 acres; population, 2120. Shaw Hill is the seat of the Crosse family. Medicinal springs were discovered in 1845; they arise from coal-borings at a depth of 265 feet. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1830. Population, 2662. The living is a vicarage, with Clayton-le-Woods annexed, in the diocese of Manchester; net value, £240 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Leyland. The church is a handsome building, built in 1830 and rebuilt in 1882. It is in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, N transept, S porch, and tower. There are a Wesleylan and two Roman Catholic chapels.
