Swarthmoor, Lancashire

Historical Description

Swarthmoor, a hamlet in Pennington parish, Lancashire, and an eminence 1 mile SSE of Ulverston. It was the place where, in 1487, the rebel forces of the impostor Lambert Simnel encamped. It has a post office under Ulverston; money order and telegraph office, Ulverston. Swarthmoor Hall was for several years the residence of George Fox, who established the Friends' meeting-house. There is also a church institute.
