Newchurch or Newchurch Kenyon, Lancashire

Historical Description

Newchurch or Newchurch Kenyon, a village and a parish in Lancashire. The village stands near Kenyon Junction railway station, 3½ miles S of Leigh, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Warrington. The parish consists of the townships of Kenyon and Culcheth, contains the hamlets of Risley, Twiss Green, Wigshaw, and Holcroft, and was formerly a chapelry of Winwick parish. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 1827. The manor of Culcheth, with Culcheth Hall, belongs to the Withington family. The Earl of Wilton is lord of the manor of Kenyon. The cotton manufacture is carried on, and bricks and tiles are made. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Liverpool; net value, £239 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Derby. The church is old, and was restored in 1877; comprises nave, aisles, chancel, S porch, and western tower; and contains some brasses. There are Presbyterian and Primitive Methodist chapels and some charities.
