Huyton with Roby, Lancashire

Historical Description

Huyton-with-Roby, a village, township, and parish in Lancashire, 8 miles E of Liverpool. The village contains in its neighbourhood many good houses, and has a station on the L. &N.W.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Liverpool. The township comprises 3054 acres; population, 4625; of ecclesiastical parish, 3476. The parish once contained also the townships of Knowsley and Tarbock. Much of the land, with Knowsley Hall, belongs to the Earl of Derby. Tarbock is the property of the Earl of Sefton. About 200 acres are peat moss. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Liverpool; net value, £329 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Derby. The church is ancient, was restored in 1875, and has several good memorial windows and an ancient carved oak screen of date about 1460. The perpetual curacies of Knowsley and Eoby are separate benefices. There are Congregational and Roman Catholic chapels for Hnyton. The Congregational chapel is a handsome edifice in the Pointed style.
