Farington, Lancashire

Historical Description

Farington, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Lancashire. The township lies on the river Lostock, and on the Preston and Wigan railway, 2½ miles S of Preston, and has a station with telegraph office on the L. & Y. and L. & N.W. Joint railways, and a post and money order office under Preston. Acreage, 1860; population of the township, 2154; of the ecclesiastical parish, 2636. Faring-ton House and Wellfield House are chief residences. Part of the land, formerly maishy, has been reclaimed, and is now under cultivation. Many of the inhabitants are employed in cotton mills. The ecclesiastical parish is more extensive than the township, and was constituted in 1842. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Manchester — gross value, £150 with residence. The church is modern— A stained glass window was erected in 1889, and the interior restored and re-decorated in 1891. There is an. endowed free school.
