Strood, Kent

Historical Description

Strood, a town and a parish in Kent. The town stands on the river Medway, at the junction of the S.E.R. and the L.C. & D.R., opposite Rochester, forms practically one town with Rochester and Chatham, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Rochester. The parish consists of Strood Intra and Media within Rochester borough, and Strood Extra without the borough. Acreage, 1491; population of the civil parish, 7982; of the ecclesiastical, 10,015. The manor was given by Henry II. to the Knights Templars. A preceptory of the Knights, and an hospital of the time of Richard I. were here, and have left some remains. Brick-making is carried on. The church of St Nicholas is a plain building of stone, and was rebuilt in 1812. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester; gross value, £200 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. St Mary's is a building of stone in the Early English style, and was erected in 1869. The living is a vicarage; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Rochester. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Congregational chapels. The Conservative Club, a handsome building of brick, was opened in 1890.
