Chart Sutton, Kent

Historical Description

Chart-next-Sutton-Valence or Chart-Sutton, a parish in Kent, on the verge of the Weald, 4¼ miles from Staplehurst on the S.E.R., and 6 from Maidstone. It has a post office under Staplehurst; money order and telegraph office, Sutton-Valence. Acreage, 2188; population, 673. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury; net value, £175 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Rochester. The church, dedicated to St Michael, was partially destroyed by lightning in 1779 and lost its spire, but has been rebuilt. It has no chancel. The burial ground contains the remains of a former Lord Mayor of London, Robert Peckham, of Maidstone, interred in 1814.

St. Michael (parish church)

The church of St. Michael was partially destroyed when struck by lightning 3 April, 1778, and lost its spire; it was rebuilt without a chancel, is of stone, in the Late Decorated style, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells; it was re-pewed in 1868, and in 1896 to 1898 underwent extensive alterations at a cost of about £2,000, and affords 270 sittings. In the churchyard are interred the remains of Robert Peckham, of Maidstone, a former Lord Mayor of London.
