Historical Description

Royston and Hitchin Railway, a railway in. Herts and Cambridgeshire, from a junction with the G.N.R. at Hitchin, east-north-eastward and north-eastward, past Royston and Shepreth, to a junction with the Bedford branch of the G.E.R., giving access thence to Cambridge. It consists of a main part from the Hitchin junction to Royston, 12¼ miles long, authorised in 1846 and opened in 1850, and an extension thence past Shepreth, 5 miles long, authorised in 1848 and opened in 1851. The line is now leased to and occupied by the G.N.R.
