Dorstone, Herefordshire

Historical Description

Dorstone, a village, two townships, and a parish in Herefordshire. The village stands on the river Dore, 6 miles E of Hay. It has a station on the Golden Valley railway, and a post and money order office under Peterchurch (R.S.O.); telegraph office, Hay. The townships are Bage and Pow-mine, and lie around the village. The parish comprises 5376 acres; population, 417. A stone column, called Arthur's Stone, thought by some to be Druidical, crowns a hill near the village, and is seen at a considerable distance. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford; net value, £408 with residence. The church was rebuilt in 1889, in the Early English style. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
