Woolston, Hampshire

Historical Description

Woolston, a chapelry in St Mary Extra parish, Hants, with a station on the L. & S.W.R., 79 miles from London. It lies ESE of Southampton, from which it is separated by the river Itchen. It was constituted in 1864, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Southampton. Population of the ecclesiastical district, 3538. Much of the land was formerly open heath, but is now occupied by houses. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Winchester. The church was built in 1864, is in the Decorated English style, and has been enlarged. There are Presbyterian and Wesleyan chapels, and an Oddfellows' hall.
