The Solent, Hampshire

Historical Description

Solent, The, the belt of sea between the mainland of Hants and the Isle of Wight. It commences on the E at Spithead, and terminates on the W between Hurst Castle and the Needles; sends off Portsmouth harbour from its E end and Southampton Water from its N side; describes the segment of a circle with the convexity toward the N; measures 23½ miles in length and from 2 to 4½ in breadth, and Jias a depth of from 4 to 12 fathoms, increasing toward the W.
