Spithead, Hampshire
Historical Description
Spithead, a famous roadstead in Hants, in the E end of the Solent, at the mouth of Portsmouth harbour. It takes its name from the Spit, a sandbank about 3 miles long, running southward from Gilkicker Point; is the favourite rendezvous of the British navy, is defended on the W by Fort Monkton, on the E by Southsea Castle and Fort Cumberland, and has been the scene of many remarkable events, noted in our article on PORTSMOUTH.
