Itchin Abbas or lichen Abbas, Hampshire

Historical Description

Itchin Abbas or lichen Abbas, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands on the river Itchin, 3¼ miles WNW of Alresford, and has a station on the L. & S.W.R., 60 miles from London, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Alresford. Acreage, 1951; population of the civil parish, 233; of the ecclesiastical, 239. A small priory formerly was here, and part of it is now included in a mansion. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; value,, £380 with residence. The church was built in 1863 on the site of a previous church of true Norman character, and is itself in the Norman style, cruciform, 58 feet long from E to W, and 46 along the transept.
