Freemantle (Milbrook), Hampshire
Historical Description
Freemantle, a chapelry in Millbrook parish, Hants, on Southampton Water. It is a suburb of Southampton, and has a post and money order office under Southampton; telegraph office, Southampton. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; value, £280 with residence. The church was built in 1865, and is in the Decorated English style, and cruciform. It was enlarged in 1874. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Freemantle House was a retreat of the poet Cowper in his early years. The estate around it has been built over.
