Emsworth, Hampshire

Historical Description

Emsworth, a small town situated at the north of Ems-worth Channel, 11 miles from Portsmouth, and 7 from Chi-chester. It has a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 77 miles from London, and a head post office. It possesses a convenient and picturesque harbour, and carries on a noted fishery of oysters which abound in Emsworth Channel, and lias some trade in coasting commerce, shipbuilding, rope-making, and net-making. There is a hall for entertainments and a reading-room. A fine silt abounds in the adjacent waters, and is mixed with clay for bricks; very large fig trees flourish in the gardens. Population, 1881. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester; value, £200. Patron, the Rector of Warblington. The church was built in 1840, and has been twice enlarged. The chancel was built in 1892 from designs by Sir A. Blomfield, R.A. There are Congregational and Baptist chapels.
