Eling, Hampshire
Historical Description
Eling, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands on the north-west horn of Southampton Water, near the mouth of the river Anton, and near Totton station on the L. & S.W.R., 4 miles W of Southampton; was known at Domesday as Ediinges; is said to have then had a church, two mills, a fishery, and a saltern; has granaries, storehouses,, and several docks; and carries on a trade in corn, timber, and coal. Post town, Southampton. The parish includes St Mary's, Eling, North Eling, Marchwood, Colbury, and, Netley Marsh. Acreage, 18,581 of land, of which about 10,000 are in the New Forest, and 726 of water; population of the civil parish, 6462; of the ecclesiastical parish of St Mary's Eling, 2138; of North St Mary's Eling, 1470. The manor in the time of Edward the Confessor was under obligation to give half-a-day's entertainment to the king whenever he should pass it. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £658 with residence. The church is of various dates from the llth century, and contains many interesting monuments. A new church in the Early Decorated style was erected in 1869. There is a chapel of ease, and-St Mary's Hall, used as a reading and recreation room.
