Swell, Upper, a village and a parish in Gloucestershire, 1 mile NW of Stow-on-the-Wold. Post town, Stow-on-the-Wold. Acreage, 1376; population, 74. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £80. The church is partly Norman, and contains a piscina and sedilia.

St. Mary (parish church)
The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small western turret containing 2 bells: the chancel arch and doorway are Norman, beautifully decorated with lozenge moulding; the chancel is Norman with the exception of the east window, which has Decorated tracery, and is filled with stained glass, placed in 1872 as a memorial to Mrs. Eliza Arch Pole: the chancel retains a piscina and sedilia, and there is a Perpendicular font: there are sittings for 70 persons.
