Saintbury, Gloucestershire

Historical Description

Saintbury, a village and a parish in Gloucestershire, 1½ mile NE by N of Broadway, 3 miles S of Honeybourne station on the G.W.R., and 3 W of Chipping Campden. Post town, Broadway. Acreage, 1379; population, 122. The manor was anciently called Snineberie, after King Sweyne, and belongs now to the West family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £216 with residence. The church is cruciform, was originally Norman, and retains some ancient stained glass, a piscina, sedilia, and a brass of 1574.

St. Nicholas (parish church)

The church of St. Nicholas is a building of stone, in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and a tower with spire, containing 6 bells: the east window retains some ancient stained glass, representing St. Nicholas: during the years 1907-13 restorations were carried out at a cost of over £1,100: there are 120 sittings.
