Little Sodbury, Gloucestershire

Historical Description

Sodbury, Little, a parish in Gloucestershire, 2 miles E. by N of Chipping Sodbury, and 4 E by N of Yate station on the M.R. Post town, Chipping Sodbury. Acreage, 1093; population, 143. The manor house, now occupied as a farmhouse, was the seat of Sir John Walsh. There are remains of a Roman encampment. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; gross value, £157 with residence. The church was built in 1859. Tyndale, the translator of the Scriptures, was for some time a resident.

Church of England

St. Adeline (parish church)

The church of St. Adeline, incorporating as far as possible the design of its predecessor, is an edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave (without chancel), north aisle, vestry, south porch and an embattled south-western tower with pinnacles, containing the old bell: there are 150 sittings: the churchyard was formed and inclosed in 1859, there having originally been no burial ground in the parish.

St. Adeline (old) (parish church)

The old church of St. Adeline, a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, adjacent to the Manor House, was disused in 1859 on account of its dilapidated condition.
