Gloucester and Berkeley Ship Canal, Gloucestershire
Historical Description
Gloucester and Berkeley Ship Canal, a canal from Sharpness at Berkeley Pill on the Severn to the city of Gloucester. It was commenced in 1794 and completed in 1827, and was designed to avoid the shallows and windings of the Severn. It is 17 miles long without locks except at the ends. There are extensive docks both at Sharpness and at Gloucester.
