Frenchay, Gloucestershire

Historical Description

Frenchay, a tithing and an ecclesiastical parish in Winterbourne parish, Gloucestershire. The tithing lies on an affluent of the river Avon, 1½ mile N of Fishponds station on the M.R., and 4½ miles N by E of Bristol. It has a post office under Fishponds (R.S.O.); money order and telegraph office, Hambrook. The ecclesiastical parish includes also the hamlet of Hambrook, and was constituted in 1834. Population, 1132. Frenchay House, the Manor House, and Mal-mains are the chief residences. A thin vein of coal occurs here in a solid rock. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; gross value, £365 with residence. Patron, St John's College, Oxford. The church was built in 1834. There is a Unitarian chapel, a meeting-house for the Society of Friends, and a Free Methodist chapel. There is a mission-room at Hambrook belonging to the church.
