Edgeworth, Gloucestershire

Historical Description

Edgeworth, a parish in Gloucestershire, 6½ miles NW of Cirencester. It has a post office under Cirencester; money order and telegraph office, Sapperton. Acreage, 1598; population, 140. The surface is hilly. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; gross value, £254 with residence. The church, which is Early English with Norman work, has been entirely restored. It has a fine modern oak screen and painted windows.

St. Mary the Virgin (parish church)

The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone, chiefly in the Early Perpendicular style, but with some Norman portions, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells, rehung in 1895: it was entirely restored in various years by the Rev. G. F. E. Shaw M.A. rector 1864-1904, and the late H. G. W. Sperling esq. and has over 100 sittings.
