Holy Rood (parish church)
The church of the Holy Rood is a building of stone, principally in the Saxon style, but with traces of very early Saxon and Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: the walls of the older part of the building are of rubble masonry: the chancel retains an ancient altar and curious slabs, with life-size Saxon figures in bas-relief: the east window is a memorial to Edward Haines, 1863, and above it, on the exterior wall, is a crucifix: there are also two memorial brasses to the Rev. Henry Charles Raymond Barker M.A. rector here 1841-89, hon. canon of Bristol, and a great benefactor to the parish, and another to the Rev. Charles John Martyn M.A. rector 1892-1900: the church affords 200 sittings: the broken shaft of a cross stands on a pedestal in the churchyard.
