Stainton, Great, or Stainton-le-Street, a township and a parish in Durham. The township lies 4 miles W of Aycliffe railway station, and 6¼ NE by N of Darlington. Post town, Ferryhill; money order office, Carlton Iron Works; telegraph office, Aycliffe. Acreage, 1258; population, 88. The manor belongs to Lord Eldon. The ecclesiastical parish contains also Elstob township. Population, 147. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Durham; net value, £198 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church was rebuilt in 1876, is in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave, and western tower with spire.
