Hetton le Hole, Durham

Historical Description

Hetton-le-Hole, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Houghton-le-Spring union, Durham. The village stands 6 miles NE of Durham, is a polling-place for the N division of the county, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office (R.S.O.) The township comprises 1618 acres, population, 12, 726. Hetton House is the chief residence. Hetton collieries, belonging to the Hetton Coal Company, were opened in 1822, lie beneath strata of mag-nesian limestone, 38 yards thick, and though undertaken in defiance of sinister prognostication by some geologists, have proved a very great success. The Hetton railway, consisting of a series of inclined planes, and worked partly by stationary engines, partly by locomotive ones, was constructed for conveying coals hence to the river Wear, and was one of the earliest railways executed on plans superior to the old tramways. It is now connected with the Durham and Sunderland line, and has in Hetton township a terminal station of the name of Hetton. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1838, but as to civil matters the township is in the parish of Honghton-le-Spring. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 3909. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Durham; net value, £230 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Durham. The church was built ia 1832, is in the Gothic style, and has a bell turret. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and New Connexion Methodist chapels, a colliery school, built by the Hetton Coal Company, and reading-rooms and libraries.
