Escomb, Durham

Historical Description

Escomb (formerly Ediscunz), a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Durham, on the river Wear, 1½ mile from Etheriey station on the N.E.R., and l½ WNW of Bishop-Auckland. There is a post office under Bishop-Auckland; money order and telegraph office, Witton Park. Acreage of the township, 1032; population, 3401; of the ecclesiastical parish, 1034. The chief employment is coal-mining. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Durham; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Durham. The church was at one time prebendal to Auckland College, was annexed in 1501 to Durham deanery, and was restored in 1880. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a cemetery.
