The Parret, Dorset

Historical Description

Parret, The, a river of Dorsetshire and Somerset. It rises near Cheddington, in Dorsetshire; runs 2 miles northward, through Pen-ot parish, to the boundary with Somerset; and goes northward and north-westward, within Somerset, past South Petherton, Muchelney, Langport, Boroughbridge, and Bridgwater, to Bristol Channel at Stert Point. It makes a total run of about 35 miles, and receives the Isle at Muchelney, the Yeo at Langport, and the Tone at Boroughbridge. It is navigable up to Langport, expands in its lower reaches into considerable estuary, and it is stemmed in its estuarial part by a tide of 36 feet, sometimes rushing with a " bore " of 6 feet. It was known to the Saxons as Pedrida.
