Chideock is a parish and exceedingly picturesque village, situated on a brooklet, called the Winniford, as shown by the "title deed" in the hands of Sir Frederick Weld, dated 1243, lying in a valley between the hills of Quor, Eype Down and Thorncombe on the east and Haddon Hill and Golden Cap on the west, and bounded on the south by the English Channel; 2½ miles west from Bridport and 6 east from Lyme, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Whitchurch Canonicorum, Bridport union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bridport Lyme portion, archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury.
